this is the St. Louis Arch. 630 feet tall. In the shape of a catenoid (means: 630' high and 630' wide at base). It was designed by Eero Saarinen..took two years to build and opened in 1965. Why was it built alongside the Mississippi River? To celebrate the westward expansion in the US, toward CA. From the Arch spot, it took Lewis & Clark over two years to explore the West where no white man had traveled until the 1,800's...President Jefferson commissioned the study..that's why it's called the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial..you can ride in a capsule all the way to the top. Great view for about 50km's.
